Neuropeptides
MT-1 / Melanotan I
What is it?
Melanotan I is a synthetic analogue of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone. The related medicinal ingredient afamelanotide has a defined pharmaceutical context. A supplier vial labelled MT-1 is not automatically the same product as an approved afamelanotide implant.
How it is studied
Melanocortin signalling can influence melanin production in the skin. Research on pigmentation must distinguish this pathway from protection against every form of ultraviolet damage. Increased pigmentation is not a substitute for established sun protection.
What the evidence shows
Early human research investigated pigmentation and pharmacokinetics. EMA information for Scenesse describes a specific afamelanotide implant used in adults with erythropoietic protoporphyria, a rare light-sensitivity disorder. Its formulation and indication are narrow.
Limitations & safety context
Clinical evidence and authorisation for an implant cannot be transferred to a 10 mg supplier vial. Skin changes and systemic effects need clinical evaluation. The attachment does not specify sequence verification, bioequivalence or a finished medicinal product.
