Growth-factor signalling
MGF
What is it?
Mechano growth factor is a term associated with an alternatively spliced IGF-1 precursor and, in many supplier listings, a synthetic peptide from its E-domain. A full precursor protein and a short E-domain peptide are different materials. The attachment does not state the sequence of FM2.
How it is studied
Research asks whether an E-domain region has biological actions beyond mature IGF-1, particularly in cell proliferation, migration and responses to mechanical stress. The distinction between a gene transcript, precursor and isolated peptide matters when comparing papers.
What the evidence shows
A 2011 human muscle-progenitor cell study reported effects on cell activation and fusion potential. A later study found no apparent proliferative effect of an MGF peptide in myoblasts or primary muscle stem cells. These differing results illustrate model and material dependence.
Limitations & safety context
It is inaccurate to describe MGF as a proven muscle-building or injury-healing treatment. Sequence identity and experimental controls are essential. Evidence for endogenous IGF-1 isoforms does not demonstrate that an isolated supplier peptide reproduces those functions in people.
